Anxiety Cure

Sometimes part of the anxiety cure is the proper use of anxiety medications. These are also sometimes referred to as anti-anxiety medications. These two terms refer to one and the same type of medication. Because of the medication family of prescription drugs known as anti-depressants, the anti label is sometimes added to the word anxiety, thus the term anti-anxiety medication has become accepted. For the purposes of this article, we will use the label anxiety medication.


Anxiety medications can be helpful to a person suffering an anxiety disorder. These medications, which are also known as benzodiazepines, can help the patient get a handle on the symptoms of anxiety and particular panic attacks. They are also used to help with the treatment of agoraphobia. Though anxiety medications are known to have an immediate effect and reducing anxiety, there is another family of medications known as antidepressants. These usually take a couple of weeks or so before their effectiveness is felt.


The downside, of course, to anxiety medications is they are known to be addictive. This means that some people can develop a need for them and could have a great deal of difficulty after being taken off of the prescription.




Prescription drugs can be very useful in treating a person with anxiety and they are often used with different types of therapy. Together, medications and therapy can work toward a cure for the condition. Anxiety medications are only effective when they are used exactly as exactly as directed. They must be taken at a certain time of the day, if this is what has been prescribed. The prescribing doctor will also give instructions as to whether or not the medications should be taken with food. The biggest concern, of course, is that the patient take the exact amount to which he or she has been prescribed.


The cost of anxiety medications can be a consideration. Without being well insured, the patient may find them very expensive. Knowing this, and realizing that many anxiety patients are without substantial resources, pharmaceutical companies and some state governments have instituted programs to help these types of patients get their proper medications.




An anxiety patient will be treating with anxiety medications for a variety of problems. These problems stem from common phobias through the more serious type of anxieties, which include panic attacks and obsessions. Agoraphobia is another type of problem that anxiety may bring to its subjects. This must be dealt with, possibly with medication, but it also has to be learned to be overcome.




The known side effects of anxiety medications are usually stated as manifesting themselves and headaches, stomachache's such as nausea and sometimes dizziness. Also, there have been cases where sexual dysfunction has been noted. Of course, before the prescription is written the doctor has to weigh these types of side effects against the severity of the symptoms the patient may be experiencing. He will also have to take note of anything else prescription or otherwise a patient may be taking because of the potential of harmful interactions.




Antidepressants can bring relief for certain types of anxieties but they are often said to take five to six weeks before they start working. Antidepressants, as the name implies are helpful in bringing a person out of a depressed state. Their effectiveness varies from patient to patient and depends greatly on the type of depression the patient is suffering. Also, as with anxiety medications, antidepressants have their own types of withdrawal symptoms. This is because when taken for a prolonged period of time the patient may not be able to elevate his mood when he is not taking them. However, that aside, antidepressants have been very helpful and are an often-necessary part of treatment for some types of anxiety disorders.




Lately, other methods have evolved in the treatment and cure for anxiety. Relaxation techniques have their place in treating anxiety and panic, Also, many times anxiety education can be most helpful.
